With the CoronaVirus pandemic, medical practitioners all over the world are working tirelessly to keep patients in good health. As the mortality rate increases daily, the need for more medical practitioners also increases. Bhasha Mukherjee, the former Miss England who became a medical doctor only a few weeks before she received her title also felt that rising pressure.
While on her humanitarian trip to India, the pandemic surged across the globe. According to figures from John Hopkins, England is one of the most affected countries, recording about 48,000 cases. She started hearing from colleagues about the long hours they were working and knew she had to trade in her crown for a stethoscope. She felt that it was wrong to be wearing her Miss England crown, even for humanitarian purposes when her colleagues were working hard.
Bhasha Mukherjee told CNN, “When you are doing all this humanitarian work abroad, you’re still expected to put the crown on, get ready… look pretty. I wanted to come back home. I wanted to come and go straight to work. It was incredible the way the whole world was celebrating all key workers, and I wanted to be one of those, and I knew I could help. There’s no better time for me to be Miss England and helping England at a time of need.”
Although she always intended to return to medicine in August 2020 after her time as Miss England, she had to change her plans. She is back in England and is self-isolating for 14 days before she will return to work with the rest of her colleagues wherever she’s needed.
