Ayo Animashaun, the founder of The Headies, shared the reason behind the prestigious award show’s return to Nigeria after hosting the event abroad in 2023. Speaking at a recent ceremony in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Animashaun took a moment to express his gratitude to the sponsors, his dedicated team, and the partners who have helped keep The Headies alive despite the economic challenges facing the country.
“I want to thank all our sponsors behind the scenes,” Animashaun began, acknowledging the unwavering support of brands that have continued to back The Headies, even amid Nigeria’s economic struggles.
He went on to highlight the importance of such partnerships, particularly with Multichoice and the collaboration with Hiptv and DStv, which have been crucial to the success of the award show. “You can’t host a prestigious award like The Headies without the support of strong sponsors,” Animashaun said,
However, the journey back to Nigeria wasn’t a simple decision. Animashaun admitted that there were moments when he considered continuing the award show abroad. He explained that with Afrobeats reaching its global peak, the decision was made to take The Headies to the United States for the 16th edition.
“Afrobeats was on the world stage, and we needed the world to see it,” he explained. But he also acknowledged the criticisms that followed the move, with many asking why the award was been held outside Nigeria.
Now, as The Headies prepares for its 17th edition, Animashaun reflected on how the tides have shifted. “We are back at least for this year, for the 17th edition,” he announced with a sense of pride. “The award show is returning to its roots, and it’s up to you, the fans and the industry, to support it.”
He also expressed his gratitude to the production company in Nigeria that helped turn the situation around and made it possible for The Headies to return home. Animashaun emphasized the role of the Lagos State government and Eko Hotel, which has long been the home of The Headies.
“Eko Hotel has always been the venue for The Headies, and we thank them for their continued support,” he said.
The announcement ceremony, which was hosted by actress Nancy Isime, marked a turning point for the iconic music awards, as it signals a renewed commitment to showcasing Nigerian talent and celebrating the vibrant Nigerian music industry. With the 17th edition set for April 2025.
