To someone who hasn’t watched Ultimate Love, it would appear that it is just another reality show. One could assume that Multichoice was simply trying to push another version of Big Brother Naija. In fact, the fans are constantly trying to find similarities between both shows, and we can’t really blame them. People love what they are familiar with and only tolerate new ideas.
However, the shows are wildly different from each other. Quite frankly, the only similarities between both shows are the weekly parties, daily tasks and the fact that they are live 24/7. For clarity sake, here are all the ways Ultimate Love is different from Big Brother Naija:
1. There are no housemates in Ultimate Love, the contestants are called lovers.
2. The house where all the lovers stay is called ‘The Love Pad’.
3. The sole purpose of Ultimate Love is to help contestants find their life partners.
4. Contestants are paired (one male/one female) throughout the course of the show and given ‘ship’ names.
5. Instead of an invisible ‘Voice of God’ leader, the lovers are directed on daily tasks by a visible ‘Aunty’ (Adesuwa Onyenokwe), who comes into the Love Pad daily to have conversations with them.
6. Unlike Big Brother Naija where the housemates are cordoned from the rest of the world for over 90 days, the lovers are allowed to have occasional communications with the outside world while they stay in the house for two months.
7. Instead of a ‘head of house’ room, after certain tasks, the winning couple is allowed to have the private room for one week.
8. Ironically, despite being a show about love, they are not allowed to have sex in the love pad unlike in BBNaija where anything goes.
9. Instead of ninjas, the lovers get butlers whose faces are visible. The butlers are also allowed to talk with the lovers and give them instructions.
10. Instead of evictions, lovers are asked to checkout from the show.
11. Contestants are checked out as couples but they all get consolation prizes as they are asked to leave the house.
12. Lovers are made to decide as a couple what other couples they will like to put up for possible eviction.
13. They are made to pick two couples other than themselves and they have to publicly confirm the couples of their choice.
14. The winners do not immediately receive all their prizes at the end of the show, instead, they have to wait for a window period where they would decide if they want to be together forever.
15. They will then be thrown an extravagant traditional wedding and be given a house.
The shows are even more different than what is seen from the house. The studio audience from both shows is treated differently. In a live show for Big Brother Naija, the fans are made to stand throughout while the audience in the Ultimate Love show is allowed to sit. The performances are different for both shows too. For BBNaija, more mainstream artistes are invited to perform at the shows, however, there are more live band performances during the live shows for Ultimate Love.
Without a doubt, both shows are very different but one thing remains the same for both – great content. Multichoice has hit a goldmine with this new show, in terms of content.
