Following the marking of the International Women’s Day celebration , Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has called for the compensation of rape victims in Nigeria.
In a statement issued in Abuja to mark the International Women’s Day, the Honourable, representing Lagos, bemoaned the increasing violence on women in the country.
Part of the statement reads: ‘It is quite gladdening that the House of Representatives has taken a major step in this regard by passing a bill for an Act to eliminate all forms of violence against persons…the bill currently in the House also seeks for the compensation for victims of rape amongst other things’.
The lawmaker expressed optimism that the bill would soon be passed by the Senate and subsequently signed into law by the President.
A bill sponsored by Abike Dabiri-Erewa was passed by the House of Representatives on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 recommending life imprisonment for any person convicted of rape and a minimum of 20 years without an option of fine for persons convicted of gang raping someone.
