The fourth edition of the controversial male pageant Mr Gay World was on Sunday, April 8, 2012 held for the first time in Africa at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef city, South Africa.
The pageant, according to organizers, seeks to fight the discrimination faced by the gay community and at the same time empower and raise the visibility of optimistic gay men in a constructive dialogue with other citizens.
This year’s edition attracted interest of contestants from African countries including Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia but was won by Germany’s 32 year old contestant, Andreas Derleth. Lance Weyer from South Africa came out as first runner up.
Although the act remains illegal in 37 African countries, including Nigeria, South Africa is an exception being the only country in the continent to legalise same sex marriage.
