Not less than 33 women were confirmed dead on Friday, October 19, 2012, when a bus conveying them from Lagos to Benin plunged into River J4 near Ogeberu Ijebu-Ode Expressway.
The party was said to be on their way to a burial ceremony when the incident occurred.
According to PM news, the accident occurred round 12 noon when the driver of the 36-seater bus slept off on the steering.
It was also stated that the Head of Operations of the Federal Road Safety Commission FRSC in Ogun, Cecilia Aloa confirmed the incident adding that all victims apart from the driver were all women travelling from Lagos to Benin for a funeral ceremony.
Aloa revealed that the search party for the bus and the passengers proved difficult as only three persons were rescued alive from the river through the help of local divers.
