If you have noticed, over the last two years or so, there has been a rise in the female gender dominance in the Nigerian music scene. Most have impressed with debut releases while some are still warming up. we can’t complain, in fact we have embraced them with warm smiles and a listening ear.
The British born Nigerian afro jazz singer and composer Teni was born in London but her early years in Lagos. She returned to the UK to study History and African Studies at the University College, London and the School of Oriental and African studies. This must have been her source of musical inspiration as the dark complexioned singer’s music sways towards the path of Afro beat, and Jazz.
‘Afrodisiac‘ is a soulful, sensual jazz and afrobeat inspired piece with sultry vocals which will be easily mistaken for a early ’90s Sade Adu. Teni’s voice is graceful but strong as she serenades from start to end. The single featured legendary afrobeat co-creator and master drummer, Tony Allen. My only fear is that will Teni be able to rub off the Sade Adu persona? Only time will tell. In the mean time, enjoy the video to ‘Afrodisiac‘ below…
