P-Square, made up of twin brothers Peter and Paul Okoye, are one of the most successful music duos to come out of Nigeria. Their catchy songs, energetic performances and impressive dance moves made them stars across Africa and helped take Nigerian music to a global audience.
The twins were born on November 18, 1981, in Jos, Plateau State. They developed a love for music and dance from a young age before forming P-Square and beginning their professional music career.
Their big breakthrough came in the early 2000s. They released their debut album, Last Nite, in 2003. They followed it with Get Squared in 2005. The album produced popular songs such as “Bizzy Body” and “Temptation” and helped establish P-Square as one of Nigeria’s biggest music acts.
In 2007, they released Game Over, which became one of the most successful albums of their career. It featured hit songs including “Do Me,” “No One Like You,” “Ifunanya” and “Roll It.”
They later released Danger in 2009, The Invasion in 2011 and Double Trouble in 2014.
Their catalogue also includes major hits such as “Personally,” “Chop My Money,” “Beautiful Onyinye,” “E No Easy,” “Alingo” and “Shekini.”
P-Square also worked with several major African and international artists. Their collaborations included stars such as Akon, Rick Ross, T.I., Don Jazzy, J. Martins, Awilo Longomba, and May D.
Their success earned them several major awards and nominations. They received recognition from the MTV Africa Music Awards, KORA Awards, Channel O Music Video Awards and The Headies. They were also nominated for international honours including the BET Awards, MOBO Awards and MTV Europe Music Awards.
But P-Square were known for more than just their music. Their energetic dance routines became a major part of their identity. Their music videos were often colourful and creative, while their performances were filled with choreography inspired partly by stars such as Michael Jackson.
At the height of their career, Peter and Paul were among the biggest music stars in Africa.
However, their journey was not without problems.
In 2016, the brothers split after years of disagreements. Peter began performing as Mr P, while Paul continued his career as Rudeboy.
The brothers spent several years working separately before reuniting as P-Square in 2021. Their reunion was welcomed by millions of fans, who were excited to see the twins performing together again.
Unfortunately, the reunion did not last. New disagreements later emerged, leading to another split.
Despite the difficult moments, the legacy of P-Square remains strong. Peter and Paul helped change the way African pop music was presented. Their combination of music, dance, fashion and entertainment helped them build a huge audience across Africa and beyond.
From “Do Me” and “Personally” to “Chop My Money” and “Beautiful Onyinye,” P-Square gave an entire generation some of its most memorable songs. They were more than just twin brothers who made music.
