Centre-defender for UK football club Manchester United, Rio Ferdinand landed himself in trouble after he joked about the security of the United States‘ White House being lax as he posted a photo of himself in the restricted state dining room during his team visit on Thursday, July 28, 2011, on popular micro blogging website, Twitter. Rio and his team mates were visiting the White House as part of their pre-season tour of America, but a planned meeting with the President had to be called off at the last minute because he had important matters of state to attend to.
However, the photo was cleared off the internet in no time by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as it posed as a security threat, because of the comment it carried, ‘the security needs beefing up here at the White House….‘, he tweeted.
But Ferdinand, who was shocked when he learnt that the photos had been taken off his Twitter page, expressed his concern in a series of tweets, ‘What an experience having the opportunity to go into the White House, thank you…..’ ‘now where are my pics????’. ‘Whoa….some1 has got into my phone + taken down my pics off twitter….this is deep…is jack Bauer in Washington?!’. ‘My pic of the security was #removed quick, rapido, sharpish, fast. ‘They don’t play here in DC…I feel like I’m on 24 right now #baffled.‘
Even on the following day, the 35-year-old English footballer was disturbed about his own safety after the incident, as he tweeted, ‘Training just done in DC….feels kinda weird…feel like I’m being watched by some undercover Jack Bauer type dudes…phone hacked into etc‘.
The incident has sparked anger between some football enthusiasts around the world and commenting about the incident, an arsenal fan, Mr. Kolawole Omojola told Nigerian Entertainment Today (NET), ‘It’s an annoying thing to do, my brother. He’s not the youngest in the team and he’s supposed to be aware of what’s at stake. It’s a disgrace to the team and posting such photo with that kind of message requires a penalty, if his people can’t scold him about what one can joke about and what a man shouldn’t joke about‘.
