One of NET Honours’ most anticipated categories is the ‘Most Popular Actress’ category. This year, Funke Akindele, Mercy Johnson, Tonto Dike, Regina Daniels and Toyin Abraham have all been nominated for the title.
Funke Akindele has had a busy year so far. More than the actress’ major cinema releases, Your Excellency, Who’s The Boss, and Moms At War, her personal life has also been in the spotlight.
The actress had her twins with husband JJC Skillz late December 2018, was nominated for and won the 2019 AMVCA for ‘Best Actress In a Comedy Drama’ for Moms At War.
Funke Akindele and her husband JJC Skillz were also arrested by the Lagos state government in April 2020, for flouting restrictions on social gatherings of more than 20 people, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The couple had been hosting crew members, friends and family to celebrate JJC Skillz’ birthday in their Amen Estate home/studio in Lekki. Their arrest, arraignment and punishment were closely followed on social media and kept her name in the news. The saga ended with Funke Akindele giving a public apology to fans and members of the public on social media.
Toyin Abraham also had a good 2019 both personally and professionally. She had her first child with husband Kolawole Ajeyemi, last year in August. She also won the 2019 AMVCA for ‘Best Actress In A Drama’ for her role in Elevator Baby.
While receiving her award, Toyin revealed that she had been heavily pregnant during the shoot of the movie, but had kept her pregnancy secret.
Regina Daniels, Tonto Dike and Mercy Johnson have also been in the news for their personal lives – new births and acquiring new property.
They all battle for NET Honours ‘Most Popular Actress’ award.
The NET Honours Class of 2020 awards will be presented on Saturday, June 13, 2020 on all @thenetng social media platforms.
