Darey, the African king of R&B is never one to play it safe. Over the course of his career he has been bold enough to take his art to new directions and successfully too. This only emboldens to push the envelope to creative new heights.
On ‘Sisi Eko’ remix he has once again creatively stretched his music. The remix, produced by Darey himself and Del B is an up tempo highlife upgrade of the original song which was on his last album Double Dare: Heart and Beat. The multi-talented singer quickens the tempo on the remix which makes the song a groovy highlife track that ultimately makes it a very danceable song. Even with the change of the beat, Darey still sticks to some parts of the original script such as singing the same lyrics and retaining the same hook. However his delivery is sharper and his voice is stronger on the remix. As a seasoned pro he rides the beat perfectly as he belts out the language of the yesteryears as he tries to woo a lady. He even sprinkles Igbo phrases on his verse for should I say more flavour.
Flavour‘s verse on the song is different from Darey’s. His is bubblier and frantic which is the way contemporary highlife genre is dished. Flavour’s energetic delivery of his eastern-centric lines and adlibs increase the groove factor up a notch and two. His voice compliments Darey’s and together they craft a contemporary highlife number that is bound to be on a lot of people’s playlist.
On Sisi Eko remix, Darey artfully merges two sub-genres of highlife music making them melt into one super high-life track that is bound to be a hit. It’s the perfect mixture of the old and new, of the strong and flashy. ‘Sisi Eko’ remix comes at the right time when there is a renaissance of highlife music in the urban music scene.Count this song as one of the finest of the new breed of palm wine music, sweet to the last drop.
