This is a special category that rewards a trailblazer in African music who has a huge influence on the continent and beyond.
This year, the recipient of this very special category is the talented, legendary South African pop group that ruled in the 90s, Boom Shaka.
The group consists of four members made up of two men and two ladies. The veteran group stepped on stage to perform some of their 90s classic hit tunes ‘Free’ and ‘Thobela’ at the event.
Past winners of this category include Zola, K’naan, Hugh Masekela, Oskido and Nigeria’s D’banj.
The special recognition award is the first award the group has ever won in their remarkable career.
