The Nigerian online content creators and comedy skit industry is finally getting its deserved recognition as the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) adds a new category – Best Online Social Content Creator, to recognise their work.
Nominees for the first-ever AMVCA social media content creator category announced on Saturday night include Adebowale ‘Mr Macaroni’ Adebayo, who has been combining activism with comedy and was one of the leading voices during the EndSARS protests in 2020.
He was nominated for his entry ‘Multi Personality Disorder’.
The angry mother and daughter combo Taaooma who is famous for correcting her daughter with slaps in her comedy skits was also nominated for her entry ‘Road Rage’.
Others nominees are: Tee Kuro ‘Nollywood Epic Love Movie 1&2 (Mr Parody)’, Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori – ‘Kayamata’, Oga Sabinus ‘Mr Funny’, Jacqueline Suowari – ‘Of Line and Layers’, Edem Victor – ‘First Date Mummy’s Boy’, Elozonam Ogbolu ‘Affiah De Javu’
The Nigerian online content industry is growing every day as more young people armed with smartphones, Wifi, and active social media accounts are making an inroad into the industry.
Between March and May 2020 when film production, like other activities, was halted for about two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social media content creators solidified their hold on viewers observing lockdown in their homes.
The period also saw Nollywood actors like Iyabo Ojo, Kunle Remi, among many others, becoming social content creators with their Tiktok videos to entertain their followers and promote brands on their social media platforms.
As AMVCA returns for the eighth edition, organisers announced on Thursday, March 17, 2022, that the 2022 edition would be a week-long event starting from Sunday, May 7, to Saturday, May 14, 2022, in Lagos.
