At the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards last Saturday, there was an embarrassing mix-up during the presentation of best
indigenous movies.
Presenters, Monalisa Chinda and John Okafor, came out expecting to present the award for the best Indigenous Hausa Movie, and after the nominees roll-call, the envelope which had the winner’s name and accompanying plaque turned out to be that of the Yoruba category.
In a bid to quickly save face, the roll-call of Yoruba nominees lit the screen, but that was after John Okafor had already gone to swap
the Yoruba envelope and plaque for the Hausa one.
Again, it seemed like there was going to be some sort of confusion and further delay, but Monalisa managed the situation pretty well by immediately calling out the winner of the Yoruba category, Mercy Aigbe.
While the confusion ensued, John Okafor kept trying to absolve himself and Monalisa of any blame in the letdown, making comments like, ‘Na wetin dem give us be that oh’.
Apart from that episode and an early microphone hiccup, it was a fantastic night of movie stars celebrating achievements.
