It’s been 10 years since Nigerian R&B duo Twin-X first hit the scene. Who doesn’t remember the chat topping debut single of theirs, ‘Mother mi’? Yes, it was them, the dark complexioned twin brothers who appeared into the mainstream exactly 10 years ago.
The memories are still fresh, the twins were looking for a major break back in 2001; all they had was a manager Big Bamo and a bag of songs to prove their worth, no special connections, no co-signs, nothing. All they did was drive through the busy streets of Lagos in their manager’s car, playing their songs in the car stereo trying to convince all.
Upon the eventual release of ‘Mother mi’, the track hit the airwaves and was gladly welcomed by radio listeners. Of course it was an ode to our mothers, it had to be accepted….but the one thing that stood this song out was the video.
The star-studded video which featured cameos from Keke and ID Ogunbge, Eyiyemi Pratt, Kwame, Uche Jombo, Jennifer Eliogu, Lagbaja, Tony Tetuila, Steph Nora Okere and others was directed by Big Bamo. Forget about the picture quality and don’t even try to compare with videos shot in modern times. The video was a must watch back then.
Unfortunately for the twins, who were receiving recognition, they had to return to school to complete their university degrees. They went on to release another single ‘Miliki’ in 2003 and then their debut album ‘Plenty Money’ in 2004. Their single ‘Oya’ released in 2006 received mild reviews. And very little has been heard of them since then…
