Flying the Big Brother Nigeria (BBNaija) flag up high again, Lekan ‘Laycon’ Agbelesebioba touched down at the BBNaija house on Sunday night — and put on a show that confirms he’s going to stay fresh for a long time.
The 27-year-old rapper who won BBNaija season 5 last year joined a lineup of artistes that include Made Kuti, Lojay, Ajebo Hustlers, and Avala BBNaija Season 4 housemate who headlined the much-anticipated BBNaija finale show on Sunday night.
The lineup of music artistes at this year’s BBNaija finale undeniably represents a watershed moment for young and rising music artistes and BBNaija stars as they came full circle with their A-game to thrill fans and viewers. And it was nothing short of brilliant to invite only rising stars to perform at the show’s finale, which itself promotes unknown talents to stardom.
Laycon, who was not a known singer until he came on the reality show in 2020, became an industry sensation after his hit song ‘Fierce’ went viral just a few days after getting into the BBNaija house.
On Sunday night, the ‘icon’ king first deployed his latest single ‘Wagwan’; then, he dazzled the live audience and millions of viewers with ‘Verified’, which almost all the former BBNaija housemates sang along with him.
We were left relishing the thought that somewhere in the audience, some of the former housemates like Niyi Lawal, Pere, BBNaija season 6 winner Whitemoney and others who have told us they are going into music would be looking forward to their day performing their hit songs before a live BBNaija audience in Lagos and viewers across 40 African countries and UK.
At the end of the finale show, his performance earned a rave review from fans and viewers who described his performance as the highlight of the finale and said “Laycon keeps reinventing himself. He’s here to stay for a long time.”
“Good to see him progressing,” one viewer wrote on Instagram.
If anyone has a clear understanding of what it takes to use the BBNaija platform to transition from an unknown talent into a superstar, then it has to be Laycon, who rose from an underdog on the first day of the show in July 2020 to become the most popular with the largest fanbase by the time he left the BBNaija house in September 2020. He polled a record 60% of total votes cast in the final week to win season 5 of the show last year, and the first runner-up Dorathy Bachor came a distant second with 20% votes.
Since winning, he has been showing that he didn’t go to the BBNaija house to pass the time, it was all about pushing his music, and he’s using the fame brought by the platform very well.
