Nigerian music producer Kehinde Okiki Ayorinde, popularly known as DJ Kaywise, has a lot to smile about lately. His hit single, ‘Highway’, has emerged as the Most Played Street Hop Song at the NET Honours People’s Choice Awards, one of the world’s most prestigious audience data-based awards.
NET Honours is an annual people’s choice award event that recognises top performers and events in the entertainment industry and public sector that have shaped the year through a thorough analysis of audience search results, consumer interest, social media interactions and trends.
The Most Played Streethop Song award is one of five new music categories introduced into the NET Honours Class of 2021. These new music categories are based on verifiable data supplied by Corrents, a Nigerian music analytics startup that analyses data from airplay on over 100 local radio stations and streaming platforms. The award categories celebrate the most played songs in Nigeria during the year in review (June 2020 to May 2021) and include songs across five genres: Pop, Hip-Hop, Alternative, Street Hop and Soul.
DJ Kaywise’s viral hit has clinched this award at the expense of four other street bangers – Patoranking’s ‘Abule’, Bella Shmurda’s ‘Cashapp’, Zlatan Ibile’s ‘Lagos Anthem’, and Rexxie’s ‘KPK’ – which were also nominated in the same category.
The 28-year-old, who ditched a career in aviation for music, has been consistent in churning out music since he collaborated with Dammy Krane on the 2013 single ‘Hangover.’ Over the years, he has been part of some of Nigeria’s most prominent club bangers, including the 2018 smash hit ‘See Mary See Jesus’ and the 2020 hit ‘What Type Of Dance.’ His hit single, ‘Highway’, which features rapper Phyno, has been streamed almost 3 million times on YouTube and is currently one of the biggest songs in Nigeria at the moment.
Congratulations, DJ Kaywise…jor o!
