The legacy of Afrobeat icon Femi Kuti cannot be denied as he set a record as the most Grammy-nominated artiste in Nigeria.
When Femi released Legacy +, a joint album with his son Made Kuti; it was a testament to his standing that he had established after decades in the industry and still going strong. Now the album has been nominated for Best Global Music Album at the 2022 Grammys. Femi was nominated in the Best Global Music Performance category for his song “Pà Pá Pà”, off his half of the Legacy + album, Stop The Hate, which is Femi’s 11th studio album.
Celebrating his win, Femi Kuti said, ‘My son and I want to say a big thank you to everyone that voted/nominated Legacy+. Congratulations to all the other nominees.’
Made Kuti’s excitement could be seen in space as he celebrated his debut nomination for Best Global Music Album at the Grammys. His half of the joint album called For(e)ward is his debut album, and one of the unique features of this album is that every instrument on the album was played by Made himself.
Celebrating his nomination in a message to his fans, the young Afrobeat musician said, “I’m dazed mehn!!! Guess who just got nominated for his first Grammy for his debut album? All those years I spent practising all those instruments by myself to record an album I would play every instrument in by myself!! Notating the music, recording it with @zarma_studio, editing! Man! I’m stoked! 🔥 Thank you @recordingacademy and of course to the ultimate support pillar @femiakuti.”
On the album’s release, Femi Kuti told Netng that the project was fresh because it was a different experience creating with his son. He said, ‘See, every album is special in its way, but this is even more special because I released it with my son. And being more mature, more experienced, you could say it’s my best work yet.’
The father-son duo is currently on their European tour, which kicked off on November 18, 2021, and will end in April 2022.
