Wizkid was signed as an ambassador for the United Bank for Africa (UBA) and was on a panel at the UBA Marketplace, Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. While at the panel that held during the 2019 Tony Elumelu Foundation Forum, he got to speak about his music career.
He took the opportunity to talk about the menace of yahoo-yahoo, particularly about artists who sing about it in their songs. He says that the conversation about crime in Nigeria is deeper than just making a song either insulting or exalting the yahoo-yahoo boys, saying “Nah”.
He went on to say “I wouldn’t want to be that kind of person, I feel like the kind of person I would want to be is to lead by example. All I can do for myself is to continue to be successful and touch many lives that I can. And I hope that every kid out there looks at this and emulate that and also want to be great. When I started music, I made just N250,000 and now we are talking about amazing numbers here. Just so you know, that you are not going to change anything by singing about yahoo-yahoo”.
Of course, people have assumed that Wizkid was throwing shade at a particular set of upcoming artistes with his statement who have been singing about internet fraud in their songs. Whether or not that is the case cannot be said for certain as Wizkid did not mention names, he only encouraged fellow artists to do better.
He had a lot to say in a video you can see here.
