The management of the University of Ibadan has renamed its Arts Theatre after Nobel Laureate and alumnus of the institution Professor Wole Soyinka.
The decision was officially sealed on Tuesday (July 20) and in a statement by Dr Tunde Awosanmi, the head of the institution’s Department of Theatre Arts, the university made the move in recognition of Soyinka’s global status as a writer-activist and as the first African Head of the department.
“The Council and Senate of the University of Ibadan have decided to rename the Arts Theatre of the University after Professor Wole Soyinka,” Awosanmi said.
Professor Soyinka was a student at the University of Ibadan between 1952 and 1954.
The Arts Theatre is a very historical structure in the University, being one of the oldest buildings in the University constructed in 1955 with a generous grant from the Rockefeller Foundation.
