Welcome to #TheFeed, a weekly column that gives you insight into the week’s top trending social media topics. Each week, you can expect a dispatch of curated trending topics across Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, complete with analysis and any other side gist we can find.
Without further ado, let’s get to it. Here are four of the biggest trending topics on Buhari’s internet over the past week:
Lagos Traffic: Nothing to see here – Lagos is world famous for its traffic. But this week, the traffic has been next level. One of our interns, Toni, actually walked from Ikeja under Bridge to Oshodi on Wednesday. No jokes, she looked visibly lighter the next morning. What’s worse, nobody knows why the traffic all over the city has become so crazy. I’m sure some people have started to intensify their “Canada in Jesus name” hustle. It is well.
- Burna Boy’s Grammy Nomination: The GOAT is on course for a third major international award in 2019 (the first Nigerian artiste to ever be in this position) and social media was agog with the news. Pundits materialised, analysing the nomination and what category he should have been nominated in. But the real #outsiders, like me, did not send all of that – we were all just incredibly happy for Oluwaburna. Like us, so many celebrities from all over the world also congratulated him via social media. If he should win the Grammy, it’s all over because we gonna be outchea dancing on the streets! But first, take this Burna Boy quiz and show yourself as a true Burna fan!
- Bullies in OAU: A couple of students at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, beat up another student because she was suspected of sleeping with someone else’s boyfriend. The details are messy but the bullies have reportedly been expelled or suspended and justice has been achieved for the victim, who also happens to be a new student. Social media can really be a tool for justice and I am totally here for it.
- A Babcock University Sex Tape: On Wednesday, a sex tape involving two now-former students of Babcock University was making the rounds all over social media. In fact, by 9am that morning it had already been uploaded on YouTube and PornHub, yes you read that right. The people in question apparently made the video sometime last year and Twitter investigators also claimed that the video was made at the Babcock University Teaching Hospital. Additionally, they also claimed that the video had been leaked by a friend of the girl after a falling out. It really be your own niggas. In its statement, the university said the boy in the video had been expelled earlier in the year and the girl (now a 300-level student) had also been expelled. Ordinarily, this would not be weird but the university also confirmed in its statement that the incident didn’t happen on school premises nor did it happen while the school was in session. So why was the girl expelled? Because someone at Babcock University doesn’t know their work, that’s why.
