Artiste: TERRY G
Album: GINGAH UR SWAGGAH (SEASON 1)
Is Terry G a madman who just happens to sing or a singer who just happens to be mad? Whatever might be the case, the man must be commended for building something of a formidable brand around this character that is chaotic, cavalier and creative in equal measures. The graduate of Faze’s Independent Records now operates in a world of his own, and he encourages the sane world to ‘Free Him’ to do as he pleases (or at least as the weed dictates to him).
Terry G’s uncanny ability to instantly captivate the listener with a hook so alluring that its melody becomes addictive after just two listens has spurred a rapid demand for his studio services. Terry then backs his vocals up with percussion-heavy beats with a thump so exhilarating; his instrumentals alone could ignite a party in an empty house. Being that Terry has been singularly responsible for handing some artistes their entire music careers, the young man has every right to demand change from himself for an improper execution of his own album.
A step back from his equally disappointing opus, Free Me, Terry G’s new album Ginjah Ur Swaggah (Season 1) lacks cohesion, it lacks a theme, it lacks direction, it lacks progression, it lacks structure; in short it lacks everything! Everything but energy, raw unadulterated, uninhibited energy, that’s the only thing the entire album possesses and possesses in excess.
Terry introduces the world to his crew House of Ginjah on the insipid Ginjah Seduction but not before he punishes the listener with a torrid Intro. Terry then proceeds to treat the rest of the album the same way he did the surprisingly popular Free Madness (Parts 1&2) – as one long winding, 19 song freestyle. Things get better on the Timaya-assisted Bad Belle but when an album’s best song is centred on a well-worn out theme and it features the artiste who wore the theme out in the first place; it doesn’t bode well for the rest of the project. I mean, there’s only so much one can say about weed, bad belle people and women (or more precisely ‘tile tile’) without irritating your listener. And while Kojo and Wine Dey Go are steps in the right direction, even they are average attempts at club dominance. Terry G conjures to mess song after song up when it might have been easier for a singer of his calibre to make them hits!
A friend once told me that in order to truly enjoy Terry G’s music; you might need to operate at the same altitude as the man, if not at a higher one (if you get what that means). Stoned or clear-eyed, the fact remains that this man has too much potential to be churning out mediocre albums like Free Me and now Ginjah Ur Swaggah (Season 1). Stardom, wealth and ultimately respect across the continent beckon for Terry G, the man may just need to ‘free his madness’ a little bit in order to taste it.
ALBUM RATING – 1.5/5

your article is 100% great, all i want to say is that Terry G has talent but he really needs to calm down, settle down and make great hit which is something almost every naija music lover expect from him and not mediocre albums like you have said. so he just needs to listen to expert like you and he will really go far. kudos to you Mr. Chiagoziem Onyekwena !!!

This onyekwena guy thinks he's brilliant. How come he's the one talking and not the one singing. looking for cheap popularity.
well, This guy's English is good.( I mean the author ) But to the artiste, ur fans are your fans no matter what a Critic says.
Terry G got his own style which i suggest he should be freed. He said it that FREEE MEE… Even though you dont regard him to be what you want , I strongly stand to say if the MC calls out Terry G on stage even the bouncers would stand up for him. He is the man of the people and he's fan would always be his fans no matter what. Terry, Nigerians outside Nigeria wants to see you and more of you. You got more for the future than today.
