It is about 72 hours to a new beginning for Nigeria. On Saturday (February 16), the first leg of the general elections will be conducted and prospects vying for the office of the President and a seat in the Federal House of Representatives will be at the mercy of the populace. One vote at a time, the fate of every candidate will be determined by the electorates.
On this day, revered entertainer, entrepreneur and social activist, Bankole Wellington known popularly as Banky W is running to represent Eti-Osa constituency of Lagos in the House of Representatives. The past 12 weeks have seen Mr Wellington carry out a thorough campaign that very well spelt out his agenda; so much so that we have decided to stand behind him.
Nigerian Entertainment Today is banking on Banky W in the forthcoming elections and below are three reasons why you should too.
1. Our communities need representatives that can be held accountable
In the past 20 years of Nigeria’s democracy, our communities have been represented by politicians whose faces we get to see only via campaign posters. Their agenda or lack thereof is never spoken of, there is typically no channel of communication between them and the communities they pose to represent and as a result, the people have been ill-represented.
In the words of Banky W, “How do you hold your leaders accountable when you don’t even know who they are?”. Banky W has spent nearly a decade serving the public as a face and force with an array of youth empowerment platforms one of which was his Empire Mates Entertainment company that incubated aspirational youth figures like Wizkid and Skales.
By participating in this political race, Banky W has put his public image on the line and unlike most candidates, holding him accountable when the need arises would be an easy call.
2. His manifesto is well-defined
Banky W has done an excellent job of telling us why he is running and how he intends to see his promises through. Same cannot be said of many candidates.
His manifesto is precise: make laws that will make it possible for every Nigerian to have a chance at a better life. The five-prong agenda i.e job creation, gender equality, youth inclusion, access to healthcare and education is an important place to start the fight to save the future of Nigeria.
It is hard to argue that Banky W does not possess the vision and ability to execute the responsibilities of a legislator. In spite of the fact that his party is in the minority, his message is not, and has been heard all across Eti-Osa Federal Constituency. The same cannot be said for his opponents.
3. True change can only happen if the status quo is challenged
The promise that youths are the leaders of tomorrow is one that will never come to fruition if young people continue to watch from the sidelines.
This year, Bankole Wellington is the alternative to the status quo and every single vote for him is a refusal of incompetence and unaccountability, the bane of Nigerian politics. This is a defining moment for all Nigerian who want to see actual change in the political process and in their lives. If there is anyone that can be the Neo of this Matrix, it is Banky W.
