Funke Akindele and JJC Skillz Face Backlash After Throwing Party During Coronavirus Lockdown

On Saturday, 2nd April, 2020, JJC Skillz, Funke Akindele’s husband had his birthday. In celebration, Akindele and her family had a little celebration in the confines of her home in Amen estate.

Allegedly in attendance at this birthday party was Eniola Badmus who had just returned from the United States and was supposed to be in isolation. Also in attendance was Naira Marley.

This party was following the ban of public gatherings by the Lagos State government. Akindele, a Dettol ambassador, has been a prominent face in Dettol’s Clean Hands Campaign. She has also lent her voice to the NCDC in the fight against the Coronavirus. 

The videos from the party that were shared on social media caused an outrage among fans and other social media users. Funke and her husband were called out as careless and reported as flouting the law. She was arrested shortly after these videos went viral on social media .

Funke released a video subsequently, explaining the situation. She explained that Scene-One studios and sets were located in Amen estate and that had been the sight of shooting their project. Some members of the cast and crew who couldn’t leave Lagos before the lockdown began living with them as well.

She also stated that Naira Marley who would be featuring in her new project Omo Ghetto: The Saga had been in the estate before the lockdown commenced. Funke concluded the video ‘I so much support the government on all the work being done to eradicate the pandemic… I promise to always practice what I preach’.

The punishment for the breach of the regulation prohibiting public gatherings is one month in jail or a fine of 100,000 naira. This morning, Funke and Skillz were arraigned in court where they have pleaded guilty to the charges before them.

Accoroding to the Lagos state Police command, Funke Akindele and her husband were found guilty.

They were fined 100k each, 14 days community service and are to visit 10 important places within Lagos to educate the public on the consequences of non-compliance of the restriction order.
