Senator Elisha Abbo, representing Adamawa North Senatorial District has expressed regret and begged for forgiveness over his violent behaviour at a sex shop where he physically assaulted a nursing mother for talking back at him.
The incident which sparked a public outrage after a video footage of the attack went viral online showed the 41-year-old senator hitting the woman severally across the face.
Following the assault, many Nigerians condemned his actions and called for his arrest and prosecution. They also demanded him to step down from his senatorial position as he was unfit to be a lawmaker in the senate. The senate went ahead to set up a disciplinary committee against him
Against the overwhelming backlash, Senator Abbo in a media briefing in Abuja owned up to his mistakes and wept as he apologized to all and sundry, including the victim and asked for forgiveness.
“I am not here to tell my own side of the story. It is with a deep sense of remorse and responsibility that I, Senator Ishaku Abbo (SlA), profoundly apologise to all Nigerians, the Senate, the Peoples Democratic Party, my family, friends as well as our mothers — the Nigerian women,” he said.
“I personally apologise to Bibra and her family for my action towards her, which has brought immense discomfort to our body polity.”
He said that the incident has taught him a lesson and vowed to be of good conduct henceforth.
