FIFA says the voting is "evenly split" between National team captains, National team coaches, Select members of the media, and Public fan vote.
Global football organising body FIFA has today announced a 10-man shortlist for the world best player award for 2019 with Senegal’s Sadio Mane and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah being the only African representatives on the list.
Mane has had an impressive year with club and country, leading Liverpool to a Champions League triumph as well as second place in the Premier League behind Manchester City while his national team achieved first runner-up position in the recently concluded African Cup of Nations.
Salah was also part of the Champions League winning team with Liverpool, although his national team got eliminated from the AFCON competition in the early stage.
Mane and Salah also shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Arsenal’s Pierre Emerick Aubameyang at the end of the 2018/2019 football season.
Both players have tough competition for the coveted honour though, as they face Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo. Other players on the list include both forwards’ Liverpool teammate Virgil Van Dyk, as well as Real Madrid’s Eden Hazard, PSG’s Kylian Mbappe, Tottenham’s Harry Kane, and Ajax pair, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt.
Football fans are expected to cast their votes for their favourite player on the football body’s website and a winner will be announced later in the year. FIFA says the voting is “evenly split” between National team captains (25%), National team coaches (25%), Select members of the media (25%), and Public fan vote (25%).
