It was a dream start for Russia as they got their world cup journey to a flying start with a very emphatic win over their fellow group A opponent Saudi Arabia.

The Russians playing in front of their home crowd which included President Vladimir Putin totally outplayed their Arabian counterparts who were all but impressive in the game.

The opening goal came in the 31st minute from No 8 player Yury Gazinsky in the 11th minute. The second goal came just before the stroke of half-time after first-half substitute Denis Cheryshev took out two defenders in the 6-yard box before firing the ball to the far right of the goal.

Another substitute, Artem Dzyuba got in the scoresheet in the 71st with a header down to the left side of the goal with the Saudi keeper loss of ideas to keep it out. Cheryshev got his second goal in the 1st minute of stoppage in a spectacular manner fashion, playing the ball with the outside of his left foot beyond the Saudi goalkeeper before Aleksandr Golovin scored sensational freekick with the last kick of the game in the 4th minute of stoppage time.

Russia last won a world cup match when the beat Tunisia 2 goals to nil in the group stage of the 2002 world cup in Korea/Japan. The Russia team now becomes the first team to score 5 goals in the opening game of the FIFA world cup.
