1998 World cup champions France has qualified for the Semi-Finals at Russia 2018 after defeating Uruguay by 2 goals.
The South American team had conceded only one goal throughout the competition but their defence today was not strong enough to prevent two goals from the French team who totally outclassed them. Uruguay were also without their prolific striker Edison Cavani who was out with an injury he picked up from their second-round game against Portugal
France dominated the game from the beginning of the match and they were rewarded with the first goal in the 40th minute. Raphael Varane scored a beautiful header from a free kick by Antoine Griezmann. France dominated possession throughout the first half by 59 %.
The second half began and France still maintained their dominance in the game. Ngolo Conte was solid in his position making sure the French defence was relieved of any pressure. The second goal in the game came in the 61’st minute. Antoine Griezmann from fires a shot that beats the keeper Fernando Muslera from outside the box!
France pretty much knew they had won the game and played the game out, making sure Uruguay didn’t get a goal back. The game ended after 6 minutes of extra time.
Uruguay will feel bad to leave the competition at this stage. The team looked strong from the beginning of the competition, hoping they could go on to win their third world cup title after their last one 68 years ago in Brazil 1950. This may also mark the end of the world cup coaching career for 71-year-old Óscar Tabárez.
