Nearly two decades ago, Nigerian creative, Sound Sultan released a narrative single, Mathematics (Jagbajantis) that found him commenting on the dilapidated condition of the Nigerian state. The song which is perhaps Sultan’s magnum opus grew to become an anthem of sorts that still resonates eighteen years after its release.

Mathematics marked the beginning of Sound Sultan’s purposeful journey in the entertainment industry, and in fact shaped the tone of what his brand would later represent till date.

It’s 2018, the 18th anniversary of the said song and Sultan’s run in the entertainment industry. By the laws of Nigeria, the rapper, singer, comedian and 360 entertainers career is now a youth and this significant landmark is he celebrates with his ongoing live musical concert dubbed ‘Jungle Story’. The 3-day event which debuted last night at popular art centre, Terra Kulture on Lagos Island was off to a laudable start.

On the inspiration behind the show, Sound Sultan had told NET that #JungleStory is about a land that became jungle as a result of corrupt practices. “…motherland cast a spell on its people that who so ever indulged in corruption would be transformed into animals and over the years one transformation after the other it became a full-fledged JUNGLE”, He explained.

The conceptual show was politically-charged and embellished with astute stage plays that harmonize with the satirical and narrative nature of his music. The event kicked off at about 7 pm and spanned for two hours accommodating an array of consequential activities like; spoken word, socio-conscious skits and musical performances. Sound Sultan and his Jagbajantis band held sway for the most part, delivering memorable moments to guests who also enjoyed intermissive performances by Seyi Shay, Harrysongs, Comedians; Broda Shaggi, Mc Lively and Basket Mouth who participated in a play with Kate Henshaw.

The Jungle Story continues today and will present its final show on Sunday (October 14).
