Today is Barack Obama‘s last day as the President of the United States of America. After handing over to Donald Trump a few hours from now, he and his family will vacate the White House they’ve called home for the last eight years.
Tomorrow morning, Barack, Michelle and their daughters, Sasha and Malia, will wake up in this cozy house in the diplomatic neighbourhood of Kalorama, not far from the presidential residence.
The Obamas chose to remain in the capital city after his term ends – the first ex-president that will do so since 1921 – because their younger daughter Malia still has two years to finish high school and they don’t want her to change schools.
The massive nine-bedroom building is valued at $5.3m and unlike politicians in Nigeria who get mansions as parting gifts, Obama does not own it – he would be leasing it for 24 months from Joe Lockhart who was press secretary to former president Bill Clinton in the 90’s.
