The Super Eagles of Nigeria have eliminated the Bafana Bafana of South Africa on Wednesday night, July 10 2019, to secure a place in the semi-finals of the ongoing African Cup of Nations, AFCON.
The highly anticipated quarter final match took place at the Cairo International Stadium under which the Nigerian team was pitched as the favourites of the game. They didn’t disappoint as the match ended with 2-1 victory in favour of the Super Eagles.
A somewhat early goal from Samuel Chukwueze put Nigeria in the lead at the 27th minute and the South African team pushed through with a lot of determination to equalize. The opportunity finally came in a tricky header from Bongani Zungu at the 71st minute.
Although initially adjudged to be an offside goal, a second look at the details of the play from the VAR revealed that the goal was valid because the ball bounced off the back of a Nigerian player who acted as a bridge to the position of the scorer.
This brought the game to a tie, but the jinx was broken by a late goal from William Ekong on the 89th minute, which brought the match to a glorious finish for the Super Eagles.
Nigeria now awaits the AFCON semi-final game that will hold on Sunday, July 14 with an opponent that will be decided today by the last pair of the quarter final matches.
