Many times we get so used to seeing celebrities on our timelines and feeds that we forget how exactly we first heard about them. While these boys and girls are doing alright for themselves, most broke out from various TV reality shows before they had any kind of spotlight on them.
We haven’t forgotten their journeys to the spotlight and so here are 7 stars who got introduced to us through reality television shows.
HAVE YOU READ?: Who twerks better between Omawumi and Waje?
We have a reality singing show called ‘West African Idols‘ to thank for allowing us to meet the box of genius called Omawumi. Although she didn’t win the competition, the show did help position her career for much needed recognition.
6. Timi Dakolo
Way before he took home three Headies in one night or was as a coach on The Voice Nigeria, Timi Dakolo was just another singer on the debut season of Idols West Africa in 2007. Dakolo would go on to win the competition and get a recording contract that would put his musical career on the map.
5. Yemi Alade
Mama Africa has been doing so well for herself in recent times that we sometimes forget the first time we heard the name ‘Yemi Alade‘. While we haven’t heard about Peak Talent Show lately, Yemi’s isn’t going anywhere soon. Her music may not be for everyone, but there’s no doubt about the fact that she still remains a presence to be reckoned with, years after she auditioned for the reality show that changed her life.
4. Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson‘s career is so far gone that we often forget that she used to be the plus size runner-up with drop-dead vocals on American Idol. The Oscar award-winning actress was handpicked by Aretha Franklin to play her in an upcoming biopic.
Project Fame West Africa has introduced us to a number of phenomenal musical acts over the years but Chidinma is one of our favourites. The singer has collaborated with a number of big names in the Nigerian music industry since she won the third season of Project Fame West Africa.
2. Cardi B
While some of you might have known the stripper turned rapper as an Instagram celebrity, many people didn’t know about her until she appeared on VH1’s ‘Love & Hip Hop: New York‘. Following her appearance as a regular member on her show, she signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and released her hit single, ‘Bodak Yellow‘.
Long before he was breaking the internet with Agbadas and tuxedoes, the Big Brother Naija host was a housemate himself. Many people don’t know that Ebuka was a housemate in 2006 and while he did not take home the grand prize, he was able to make a name for himself in the industry.
