It’s been over 365 days since Nigerian international singer Mr Eazi released his widely acclaimed mixtape “Accra To Lagos”, which would later become the sonic blueprint for the Nigerian pop sphere in the year before, birthing the infamous “Pon-Pon” sound.

As if to solidify his place as a trendsetter, the banku singer sort of boycotted the buzzing shaku-shaku/wobe wave and is championing a dance routine named after his 2018 debut “Akwaaba” featuring Ghana’s One Corner singer; Patapaa, Pappy Kojo, and his long-time producer; Guiltybeatz.

Man Like @guiltybeatz Bout to Drop This!

Akwaaba interprets as “Welcome” in Ghana’s local dialect Twi.

Eazi started teasing the dance in the last quarter of 2017 via his Instagram stories and went on to put the dance on full display in the video for his close of year single; Pour Me Water.

How The Dance Came About

According to a 2017 Instagram post, the Akwaaba dance was lifted from popular Ghanaian artiste developer and brand manager; Bernard Kafui Sokpe popularly known as Mr. Meister.

Abeg name this Dance lmao!!! I stole it from @mistameister

Meister is an accomplished consultant known also for his role as Mr Eazi’s manager.

Since the official revelation of the Akwaaba dance in March, it has grown to become a global trend of sorts with fans from Berlin, China, London, America and across the world sharing clips on social media performing the routine.

Wake Up & Shine!!!! With Love from Berlin!!!!
