A late header from Hector Moreno salvaged a 2-2 draw for Mexico in their opening FIFA Confederations Cup match against Portugal.
Portugal had the ball in the net early on after a Cristiano Ronaldo volley crashed off the crossbar and eventually reach Pepe to score.
But the newly introduced Video Assistant Referee called the referee’s attention to Nani being in an offside position, leading to the goal being ruled out.
The European champs soon took the lead though in sublime fashion after 34 minutes.
Ricardo Quaresma had given showed great composure to control Ronaldo’s defence splitting pass to him before fooling the Mexico keeper with one touch and tapping into an empty goal.
Former Manchester United striker, Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez however equalised for Mexico in the 42nd minute with a diving header.
Portugal regained the lead in the 86th minute through Cedric Soares’ first senior international goal but Moreno’s 91st minute header off the post ensured both nations shared the spoils.
The result leaves the two nations with a point each, two points behind host nation, Russia, which opened their Confederations Cup account with a 2-0 win over New Zealand.
