Her Royal Highness Megan Markle is the ultimate ‘people’s princess’ with this new ‘workwear capsule collection’ she is launching for her charity, Smart Works. She is working in collaboration with Marks & Spencer, John Lewis & Partners, Jigsaw, and Misha Nonoo for the new line.
Smart Works is a charity set up by the Duchess of Sussex, Megan Markle to help women who want to enter or return to the workforce with new free quality work clothes and interview training. She talked about the collection in British Vogue’s upcoming September Issue that she guest-edited. She said “When you walk into a Smart Works space, you’re met with racks of clothing and an array of bags and shoes. Sometimes, however, it can be a potpourri of mismatched sizes and colours, not always the right stylistic choices or range of sizes.”
She talked about how she was working to change that issue by saying “To help with this, I asked Marks & Spencer, John Lewis & Partners, Jigsaw and my friend, the designer Misha Nonoo if they were willing to design a capsule collection of more classic options for a workwear wardrobe. Taking the idea further, many of the brands agreed to use the one-for-one model: for each item purchased by a customer, one is donated to the charity. Not only does this allow us to be a part of each other’s story, but it also reminds us we are in it together.”
It is clear that HRH Megan Markle is using this global platform she has to try and affect lives just like the 15 women she featured in the September issue too. She even talked about her need to help change the world saying “In fact, if it’s a cultural reference you’re after, forget Cinderella—this is the story of Wonder Woman, ready to take on the world in her metaphorical and literal cape.” Obviously, Megan Markle is just starting this journey and we can expect more people-oriented moves from her.
