For every newly-wed Nigerian woman, leaving the so-called singles club by getting married to her (dream) man is not enough to shut her critics up; her womb becomes an object of scrutiny for ‘womb watchers’.
Womb watchers are those nosey meddlers who take it upon themselves to create a gestational timetable for women or are quick to question her fertility and point out the absence of any form of pregnancy.
They are the ones who pass strange glances at your stomach as if they kept something in there they want to extract.
As if that’s not enough, you cannot explain that you are having bouts of stress before they reel out a series of uncomfortable questions such as ‘hope you are not stressing the baby? or has it entered?’
This is currently the plight of Media Personality , Gbemi Olateru, who got married two months ago. According to her, she can’t seem to understand why people are so preoccupied with her chubby body and are choosing to interpret it as early signs of pregnancy.
Just finished yelling at someone at work. Asking me ‘e don enter?I’m chubby, not pregnant. I don’t understand why people are so preoccupied with my uterus
