After spending 19 days in the hospital, Nelson Mandela has finally been discharged, the South African government has announced.
Mandela who was treated for a lung infection and gallstones will undergo home-based high care at his Houghton [Johannesburg] home until he recovers fully, a presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a statement.
The 94-year-old elder statesman was admitted on December 8, 2012 to a Pretoria hospital; the longest time he had spent in hospital since his release in 1990 from 27 years in prison.
