The entire Hip-Hop community is apparently mad at the Grammy Awards, why? Kendrick Lamar just lost the most important award in his career right now, that’s the ‘Best Rap Album’ to musical duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
K.Dot’s 2012 outstanding sophomore album ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City‘ was highly tipped to win the award but fans were surprised when the award was given to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for their debut ‘The Heist’ at the 56th Grammy Awards which held on January 26, 2014.
Not only did Macklemore and Ryan Lewis win the ‘Best Rap Album‘, they also went on to win two other Hip-Hop category awards – ‘Best Rap Performance‘ (beating Drake, Jay Z, Kendrick, Eminem) and ‘Best Rap Song‘ (beating A$AP Rocky, Jay Z, Kanye West, Drake).
There has been an uproar on social media from almost everyone, asking how this happened.
‘Macklemore is what everyone was scared eminem would be‘, @max_read wrote. ‘Everyone called it and we’re still shocked. Macklemore‘, @theDYNAMICS tweeted.
‘The good news the awards Macklemore has already won won’t be televised. No sympathy speeches about the rainforest or the mexicans struggle‘, @speakz tweeted. ‘Macklemore ? Really? The statement is so blunt and disrespectful lol‘, @KlvnAmberLondon said
‘Bubba Sparx is mad he picked the wrong decade to rap RT @HuffingtonPost: Best Rap Album goes to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for “The Heist”‘, @8plus9 wrote. ‘“GO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT TO YOUR BLACK PRESIDENT.” -Macklemore‘, @mdotbrown
‘I like macklemore but why tf is he winning everything in the rap category‘, @smalltownliam wrote.
Interestingly, a huge chunk of the comments came from fans who aren’t African-Americans (so there goes the racist card).
Many have however implied that the Grammy Awards organizers might have once again played the ‘white’ card at the awards. It’s certainly not because Mack and Ryan are ‘safe rappers’; Eminem who’s known to incite violence, insult races and dehumanize several sexual communities (and also insult the Grammys) is a BIG beneficiary of the award.
Except in 2006, Eminem has ALWAYS won the ‘Best Rap Album’ award as long as one of his albums was nominated. Did he deserve it all the time he won? Certainly not!

A large part of the Hip-Hop community feel Eminem shouldn’t have won the ‘Best Rap Album‘ award in 2000 (The Roots should have won), 2010 (Should have gone to Q-Tip) and 2011 (should have gone to Jay Z or The Roots).
When Eminem’s 2013 album ‘Marshall Mathers LP 2‘ did not make the Grammy calender year for the 56th awards, Hip-Hop fans were happy, knowing fully well if it did, the white boy from Detroit would pick it up without any struggle. Kendrick Lamar was tipped by almost everyone to win
Macklermore and Ryan Lewis might just be the new Eminem – it’s just their debut album, they still have quite a number of releases ahead of them so Hip-Hop fans should just forget about the category for a while.
Sorry Kendrick, you definitely underrated your opponent, maybe you should have included Macklemore and Ryan Lewis in your ‘Control‘ verse.
