Sinead O’Connor, the Irish singer best known for her 1990 hit Nothing Compares 2U has announced her conversion from Christianity from Islam. The 51 year old revealed the news on Twitter, adding that she has changed her name to Shuhada.
“This is to announce that I am proud to have become a Muslim. This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey. All scripture study leads to Islam,” she wrote.

O’Connor has had an eventful life away from music. After having four children from four marriages, she declared in 2000 that she was a lesbian. She has also been open with her struggles with mental health. Before she changed her religion, she was an ordained Catholic priest, albeit by a group not affiliated with the Catholic church. She had also earlier changed her name from Sinead O’Connor to “Magda Davvit”, saying at the time that her family was cursed and the change was to escape her parents’ curses.
Her conversion to Islam was done by Irish imam Shaykh Dr Umar Al-Qadri. who also announced via his Twitter page.
