American pop icon, actress, director and writer, Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone is celebrating her 60th birthday today.
The legendary singer has since posted up a photo of herself reminding her followers of her special day while holding up an affiche to her head with the inscription ‘The Queen’, written in English and Arab.
Madonna has had an illustrious career which has seen her go on over 10 concert tours and selling more than 300 million records, making her the best-selling female recording artist of all time, according to the Guinness World Records.
At the beginning of her music career, Madonna recorded demos with her boyfriend Stephen Bray. An early rejection letter from 1981 was auctioned in New York City in 2001, in which a music professional states: “I do not feel she is ready yet, but I do hear the basis of a strong artist.”
Madonna’s first breakthrough hit in the US was the record Holiday which entered the charts late in 1983 and climbing to number 16 in January 1984. Other early career-defining singles Like A Virgin and Material Girl followed.
1985 was a remarkable year for the young Madonna. Her Virgin Tour was a sell-out, supported by the Beastie Boys. Madonna played at the historic Live Aid concert, helping to raise money for famine victims in Ethiopia.
With an estimated net worth of $580m (£454m) according to Forbes (2017), Madonna is the richest female artist based in America. After seven huge world tours, the artist is looking to develop her performance style to suit smaller audiences. She told BBC News in 2017: “I like doing intimate shows and being able to talk directly to the audience.
The ‘Like A Virgin’ hitmaker is also big on humanitarian activities and has four adopted children from Malawi – David Banda in 2006 and Mercy James in 2009, and twins Esther and Stella Mwale who were adopted in 2017. She also has biological children, her daughter Lourdes Leon, a 21-year old dancer/actress, and son Rocco Ritchie who is 17.
