Some Nigerian SMEs are fond of using images of celebrities to promote their brands without clearing with the image owners.
Just last month, a photo of Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo made rounds on the internet. The world football star’s image was used for a bread label in Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos. Also, Osita Iheme has one time been a ‘brand ambassador’ for a chicken store in Ogba that he probably had no idea about.
The case is not different with Nollywood actress and mother of one Damilola Adegbite. She didn’t know that she is the ambassador for a cloth store based in Abuja until recently. Damilola is pissed because she wants free publicity for big brands like Dolce and Gabana and not a random cloth store in Abuja and she took Instagram to express her displeasure.
See her post below.
So @belindaeffah was “exploring Abuja” and saw this. I don’t know why Chanel or Dolce&Gabana will not be the ones to make a mistake and use my picture on their billboard without my consent. 🧐Ehn?! I would have been like N100m richer by now. Hiss. “Hans Cord” collection. Hope your market is selling oh. Una weldone 🚶♀️
