  • Never have fans had to wait an incredible seven hours for a show to begin. But once Burna got on stage, all was forgiven.

After hosting a successful headline concert at the 02 Arena in London, it was for sure that Afro-Fusion singer, Burna Boy would host a Lagos edition to mark the end of his successful outing in 2018 – arguably the best year of his career so far.

When he eventually announced the dates for the Lagos edition of the #BurnaLive concert, not even the ‘exorbitant’ ticket price could scare his most loyal fans who have waited an extra year to see their favourite star on stage after he cancelled the 2017 edition following his legal troubles at the time.

Since the beginning of 2018, it seemed like the singer’s demons let go of him as he soared high on his spaceship (pun unintended) to become one of the biggest stars of the Nigerian music industry in 2018, and the artiste of the year.

Armed with his critically acclaimed ‘Outside‘ album, some new singles, and an overflowing catalogue of hit singles over the years, the #BurnaLive concert was indeed one which was not to be missed. The singer has also kept his head in the game and had promised a spectacular showcase.

On concert day, outside the venue was already packed full by 8 pm with lots of ‘Outsiders’, a nickname which the singer addresses his fans as. The doors were thrown open soon enough and guests took their prefered position in the hall as hosts for the night, Jimmy and Shoody ‘The TurnUp King’ began to rave-up the crowd.

Opening performance from artistes such as L.A.X, Show Dem Camp, BOJ and more served as a great appetizer for the night as the crowd waited for the man of the moment to show up. Minutes soon turn to hours as fans began get increasingly agitated as Burna Boy failed to show up at almost 2 Am, over 7 hours from the scheduled time.

Late starts during events are a common feature in most Nigerian concerts but this time, the fans couldn’t take it any more as they began to murmur loudly. Even an appeal from Shoddy who had prostrated on behalf of Burna Boy could stop the crowd from expressing their displeasure.

At exactly 2:15 Am, Burna Boy arrived on stage for his opening set and immediately apologised for showing up very late. The singer then went on to narrate the cause of his delay, stating that he planned a grand entrance routine which the production team struggled for hours to fix.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m really sorry for the delay, I was supposed to have a whole video entrance thing but you know it’s Nigeria, they fucked it up,” the visibly unhappy singer explained to his fans before kicking off his energetic performance to the excitement of his fans who soon forgot how many hours they waited.

The singer would go on to have a very impressive two and a half hour-long performance, where he brought on the biggest names in the Nigerian music industry to join him. The hall shook with the vibration of nearly ten thousand people who screamed as 2Baba, D’banj, Wizkid, Duncan Mighty, Wande Coal, Davido came out in succession.

At 5 am when the concert finally came to a climax with the singer performing the monster hit single ‘YE’, it was the moment many had anticipated since they got to the venue nine hours before. But it was worth it. Every agonizing second of it.
