There were a plethora of awesome performances yesterday at the Headies Awards 2018, save for Niniola’s weak performance for which she sent out an apology and Tiwa Savage’s controversial performance of her hit song Codeine Dirt in the wake of a government ban on the drug.
Johnny Drille and Mr Real also put up fantastic showcases but the performances that stood out for me were that of Mad Melon & Mountain Black AKA, Danfo Drivers and the pop vintage duo Zule Zoo.
Even when Bovi had goofed mistaking Mountain Black, ‘Captain’ Black, nobody cared. We already knew who there were. These guys didn’t even need that introduction. From the moment the song cue came on, the over 5000 seaters Eko Conventional Centre hall erupted into a loud frenzy and fan sang along word for word. Indeed Danfo Drivers created a beautiful night of nostalgia to feed on.

How about when the eccentric duo of Zule Zoo came on stage. Though only one half of the duo was on ground, the set was still a shutdown. Shouts of kerewa overtook the air accompanied by very rigorous dancing, even those in the ‘VVVVVVVIP’.

Danfo drivers and Zule Zu yesterday showed us the importance of making classic music. Over a decade now, the hit songs by both groups continue to be enjoyed as it was just made yesterday. The impact and relevance of these songs to the pop culture in Nigeria can never be overlooked. MMMG recording artiste Tekno only recently sampled the Danfo Drivers single while making his most recent song titled ‘Jogodo’.
