Leicester City and Algerian star Riyad Mahrez is the 2016 African Player of the Year, capping off a remarkable year for the winger.

Riyad helped his club side win its first ever Premier League, just a season after being threatened with relegation.

He was awarded the BBC African Player of the Year only last month ago.

He garnered 361 votes to beat off Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon & Borrusia Dortmund), Sadio Mane (Senegal & Liverpool), Mohamed Salah (Egypt & Roma) and his countryman and club teammate Islam Slimani  to win the prestigious award.

Other winners on the night were Denis Onyango (Mamelodi Sundowns & Uganda) for African Player of the Year (Based in Africa), Nigeria’s trio of Asisat Oshoala for Women’s player of the Year, Kelechi Iheanacho for Most Promising Talent and Alex Iwobi) for Youth Player of the Year

The Super Falcons of Nigeria also won Women’s National Team of the Year.
