Former Nigerian Super Eagles striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, popularly known as “The Yak” is 36 years old today.
The footballer was born in Benin-City, Edo state and started his professional career with Julius Berger football club of Lagos in 1997.
Aiyegbeni became an international footballer after his move to Israeli club, Maccabi Haifa in 1998 and his performances in the 2002–03 UEFA Champions League earned him a loan move to English club Portsmouth which became permanent as they were promoted to the Premier League in 2003.
The Yak appeared in over 250 Premier League matches for Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers, and is the second highest African goalscorer in Premier League history with 96 goals.
He had a impressive international career with Nigeria, being the third highest scorer in the history of the Senior national football team and represented the country at four African Cup of Nations finals, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2000 Summer Olympics.
However, Aiyegbeni’s blatant goalmouth miss against South-Korea group match at South Africa 2010 remains one of the most memorable highlights of his career with the national team.
The ex-footballer who retired only last year is married to Yvvone Lameen Ikhana, the daughter of 1980 Nations cup winner Kadiri Ikhana and they have two daughters together.
