Former South Africa first lady and wife of Late South-African president, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has died. She was 81 years old.

According to her spokesman, Victor Dlamini who announced the news the wife Late Nelson Mandela died at the Netcare Milpark Hospital. She was 81 years. He said in a statement that she died “after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year.”

The late former first lady will be fondly remembered for her role in the fight against apartheid, standing loyal to her husband who was jailed for over 27 years.

In April 2016, the government of President Jacob G. Zuma gave Ms. Madikizela-Mandela one of the country’s highest honours: the Order of Luthuli, given, in part, for contributions to the struggle for democracy.
