Nigerian-Cameroonian singer Dencia feels the currently on-going online protests in response to the over 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram is pointless and should stop.
The Pop singer/cosmetic entrepreneur says there should be less talk on social media and more actions carried out in person.
‘We have spoken on social media, ‘they’ have heard now can all this unnecessary protest up and down stop? This shit happened a month ago & no1 did anything until American celebrities and something. Pls when has a protest ever solved a damn problem in Nigeria? (Enlighten me pls) and y’all should be protesting to book haram(sic)’, Dencia wrote on photo stamp posted on her Instagram page.
The #BringBackOurGirls campaign has received global attention this week with international celebrities and personalities all joining the protest which has run simultaneously on the internet and in several cities in Nigeria, US and the UK.
The singer immediately received harsh reactions, most of them condemning her opinion about the social media campaign but Dencia was also quick to respond.
‘Amazeballs. People are sitting behind their computers and encouraging street protest when (1) they go to take pictures or don’t show up (2) people get killed, injured and that same Boko Haram will target these protesters, there’s enough trouble & there’s help. We don’t want to hear anymore calamities. Hate me or love I say it as it is. If insulting me 4 the truth makes u feel beta oya oo go ahead cuz I’m good (sic)’, Dencia replied.
The singer also says she was the one responsible for the celebrity attention #BringBackOurGirls has gotten in the past weeks and has promised to visit the troubled families and give them money as soon as they are reunited with the daughters.
‘I actually sent out those messages to American celebrities to tweet about it!! and fwd to other celebrities #BeatThat & I’ll personal go give these families money when the families are reunited. I walk the walk youngin!!’, Dencia further wrote.
