The 2019 BET Awards which held last night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles saw one of Nigeria’s biggest acts, Burna Boy win the award for Best International act.
Burna was, however, not the biggest winner on the night. There were two artistes in the persons of Nipsey Hussle and Cardi-B, who bagged two awards each.
Late American rapper Nipsey and Cardi’s double awards meant that they were the biggest winners on the night. Nipsey won two posthumous awards, for best male hip-hop artist, and a special humanitarian award, to acknowledge the work he had done on social mobility in the city.
To honor the memory of Nipsey, John Legend and DJ Khaled both performed a song they recorded together with the rapper before his passing as a tribute. While performing, they turned the Microsoft Theater blue, to pay respect the gang Nipsey had grown up with, the Crip.
Cardi B, on the other hand, won the awards for best female hip-hop artist, and album of the year for her album, Invasion of Privacy. She also got to give a sizzling performance at the event, where she gave her husband, Offset, a lap dance, on stage.
Other performers on the night included Lil Nas X and the five men exonerated in the 1989 Central Park Five rape case. The CP5 were honoured with a standing ovation as they climbed the staged to announce the performance of singer, HER.
While we celebrate the biggest winners of the 2019 BET Awards, we must also celebrate our own and our country that produced, for the third time in a row, the best international act. We know that you may have some congratulatory words to say to Burna, just go ahead and leave them in the comments below.
