The much-awaited series returned for its 6th Season on Tuesday, March 6th and from the look of Episode 1, we can already tell that it will not only be enlightening, but also thought-provoking, touching on important life issues that almost everybody can relate with.
Former Big Brother Naija Housemate, Soma was not the only one who was elated to be a a part of the show. For many others like Uzoamaka Aniuonoh, who was selected at the Lagos auditions held last year, being on the award-winning show was a dream come true, not only because of the opportunity and platform it presents for exposure, but the fact that the show has changed many lives and helped young people across the world make better decisions on health, sex and their lives since its inception in 2009.
Speaking during an interview on her role on the show as Leila, Jemima Osunde had this to say: ‘MTV Shuga put me on the map and helped me showcase my talent to the world. The show has done more for my career than any other acting job I have done – both in terms of personal development and recognition.’
Since appearing as a teenager on MTV Shuga Season 4, Jemima has featured in other Nollywood movies, including a recently released movie New Money, which was directed by MTV Shuga Naija director Tope Oshin.
It is worthy to note that, MTV Shuga alumnus, Lupita Nyong’o, who starred in Season 1 of the show long before she became the darling of Hollywood, appeared in one of the most successful blockbusters of all time, Black Panther- Since it’s premiere, the movie has grossed $909.9m at the box office worldwide in less than three weeks of release.
Apart from Soma and Uzoamaka, other new cast members whose careers will most likely take flight from the show include young talents like Helena Nelson who plays the role of Diana, and Adebukola Oladipupo, who plays the role of Faa.
MTV Shuga Naija is produced by award-winning writer/filmmaker Chris Ihidero and Emma Uduma, while Tolulope Ajayi, Ishaya Bako and Tope Oshin directed the new season’s episodes.
