Hi Tosyn, I got a question for you. When you have a dream and circumstances around makes you feel like you aren’t an achiever and resources pull you down, do you fight back or keep on believing you would get there?
Vivian.
Hi Vivian
You have to keep fighting.
You would be surprised how many people who seem made who still have dreams but are limited by circumstances or finances and more. The biggest limitation may sound clichéd, but stays true; Self.
Attack your dreams. Sometimes one after the other. Sometimes juggle two together. I like what Steve Jobs said and I will paraphrase. He says sometimes people think focus it’s about saying yes to what you need to focus on, but it is actually about saying no to the hundred good ideas out there.
Not every dream has to be yours by the way. And what I mean is, do not be afraid to work with people, or for people and share these dreams with them. The joy in achievement will still be there.
Do not be afraid of age and time.
So remember, your dreams are not going anywhere, so better fight for them and enjoy every victory along the way, or give up and feel miserable!
Hi Tosyn,
I am a young graduate and I have tried my hands on so many things but have failed so far. You seem to do a lot and I thought I could get some advice from you. I am interested in taking a job in the media but I do not know what exactly and I feel afraid and weak.
-Tom.
Hi Tom,
First of all, let me say if you are trying your hands on things even when you fail, then you’ve already learnt a lot! You have learnt that it is not the falling that kills, but the not giving up. And you have learnt how not to do some things, and what to do next time.
Yes, I do a lot of things, (I really have to learn to say no, no?) but what you don’t know are all those things I have failed at! Truth is, not everyone gets it right the first time and even big corporations have their false starts or rise and falls. So do not be so hard on yourself!
I can imagine how much pressure there must be on you to do something (dammit!).
When I finished school and NYSC, I took a year off. Did nothing.
I just needed to KNOW what to do! And it was a hard year because I wasn’t making any money and no-one understood what was happening, but I am glad I did.
I got to plan a lot back then, I thought a lot, and I jotted a lot down. Sometimes in my crazy world now, I can’t get time to think, so I go back to things I wrote years ago!
What I am saying is, not everyone kicks off their careers at the same time so remove that pressure you feel at the moment!
Secondly, you have an idea where you want to work, but not what you want to do.
May I suggest a period of internship?
An internship would help you get a feel of various aspects of a place, and you may stumble on what you love there!
Also, ask yourself. If money, time, appearances, etc were not an object, what would you be doing? Be honest. Don’t be afraid of the answers that pop up. Write them down. (Watching television is always on my list). Write them ALL down!
Then look at that list. Which ones do you have the skills for right now? If you do not have the skills, can you get the skills?
Are there some on your list that you can do on your own, and which ones do you need other people for?
Put up a list of the top three (for now).
But don’t forget the others.
I still believe one day, I will get paid to watch television.
That’s all folks! Let us do this again!
In the meantime, keep sending those mails in
